2020 Kigurumi Chronicle

The 2021–2025 volumes are complete. Following the rule to avoid completed years and move backward only one year per run, this edition covers 2020 without backfilling gaps from later events.

2020 public-record timeline

1. Scope

This page covers animegao kigurumi, masked character cosplay, official IP kigurumi, and the convention, changing, photography, interaction, and publication infrastructure they directly use. World Cosplay Summit (WCS) is an adjacent general-cosplay venue; it is evidence about public infrastructure, not proof that every participant was a kigurumi performer.

Organizer and IP-owner pages can establish plans, dates, cancellations, and event structure. Participant media and search summaries remain leads. An archive without a verifiable date is not assigned to 2020.

2. Verified chronology

January 27 and February 27: a planned FGO kigurumi appearance is cancelled

Fate/Grand Order's official AnimeJapan 2020 page listed "cosplayers / kigurumi" among the booth activities planned for March 21–22 at Tokyo Big Sight.1 This is direct kigurumi evidence rather than an inference from a general convention.

On February 27, AnimeJapan cancelled the event in response to the spread of COVID-19, the government's request to refrain from large events, and participant safety concerns. FGO added a same-day notice confirming the booth cancellation.21 The record is therefore "announced, then cancelled," not an appearance that took place.

AnimeJapan's planned Cosplayers World had changing rooms, a cloakroom, official photo backgrounds, and a costume-making program.3 Their loss matters to full-head performers who depend heavily on transport, changing, rest, and photography space.

July 1 and August 1–2: WCS moves fully online

The WCS 2020 Online site opened July 1. The opening ceremony ran August 1 from 12:00 to 13:00, followed by a 24-hour online program from 20:00 on August 1 to 20:00 on August 2.4

The participation page invited people to join work- or theme-based Zoom cosplay gatherings from home, use virtual backgrounds, and potentially appear in the official broadcast. It required guardian permission for minors and warned that recorded images could later be used on websites, television, newspapers, pamphlets, and advertising.5

For kigurumi, the online format reduced mask transport and changing-room barriers but shifted consent questions toward domestic privacy, identity exposure, recording, and long-term reuse. This is distinct from the hybrid infrastructure documented in 2021.

No specialist animegao gathering with a first-party-confirmed 2020 date, place, and outcome was found in this run. The current Doll Weekend archive still leaves DW1–4 without verifiable dates, so sequence numbers are not used to infer a year.6

4. De-duplication and conclusion

This page keeps only the cancelled FGO kigurumi plan and WCS's fully online substitute. The 2021 hybrid model and Kigurumi Wasshoi!, plus later greetings and in-person safety rules, remain in their completed volumes.

The strongest 2020 conclusion is an interruption and redesign of participation infrastructure. Physical venues disappeared; livestreams, Zoom, virtual backgrounds, and reusable recordings took their place. Missing specialist records remain evidence gaps rather than a chronology reconstructed from later growth.
